It's fun to use writing to help us remember events and share those special times with others.

The Chabad House Seder

About a week ago, my family was invited to our very first Seder and I have to admit my first feeling was not elation, but anxiety. I tried to figure out the source of my anxiety and proceeded to make an extended list, starting with my 4-year-old son Sam's less than perfect table manners. As a matter of fact, I couldn't even remember the last time our entire family sat down for a meal together to practice for the event. Unfortunately, Sam is more likely to watch "The Incredibles" as he munches on microwavable mac ‘n cheese than sit at the table to eat. Then, I thought of the celebration's late evening start, the even later hour it concluded, and the probable sound of Sam's tired whining much like that of the high-pitched engine of a Mazda Miata. The readings or prayers could be fascinating to me, but might seem more like one of his dad's lectures after bopping one of our cats on the head. Perhaps this was more than a tiny recipe for disaster, especially for a young boy with a three to five minute attention span.

My husband Wayne would not be there to help me, as he considered the first Red Sox game of the season to be marginally more important than Passover. This was something else I questioned as the endless list of concerns continued. Next, I searched for appropriate clothing. Of course, I would wear my usual school garb, which limited my choices to either a dress or a skirt. Sam would wear the white cotton sweater and brown corduroy pants we received in the mail yesterday, in yet another box from my younger sister Laura. And I thought of my hair, which is always too frizzy or straight, because I am almost always too exhausted to wash and blow-dry it. On the other hand, the Judaic teacher at my school, Yocheved, has hair that always looks perfect. That lovely woman can get 3 hours of sleep after staying up with her 2- year- old, who happens to be her 13th child, and come into school looking great, with every perfect-colored hair in place.

I was also worried I would arrive empty handed. I thought about flowers, wine, cards, or kosher candy, yet Yocheved, who had graciously invited us weeks ago, mentioned she really didn't need wine or much of anything.

As I nervously knocked on the door, I could see her through the window. Opening the heavy wooden door, she grinned broadly and kindly said, " Come in, I'm just working in the kitchen." Inside, I noticed the "space-age" look of the kitchen with foil wrapped around the base of the cabinets. I then turned to see Chomi Sahler in a sweet, pink dress, her hair neatly curled around her shoulders. Yocheved began to explain what she was doing, when I realized the air was filled with the aroma of roasting chickens and my son was yanking on my sweater whispering, "Mom, Mom, why is there silver stuff on the cabinets?"

He didn't wait for the answer, as he noticed a small boy about his age streak by and Sam quickly inquired," Who's that?" My son may not sit quietly at a table for long, but he knows how to make a fast friend. Mendel Gottlieb, the 3 and 1/2 year old who lives at the Chabad House, and happens to be in my preschool class at school, was just the person to make our first Seder a much more fascinating experience.

As I followed my son making a beeline for his new friend, I noticed the long tables covered with clear plastic tablecloths, candles ready to be lit on a small table, plastic cups, large silver wine glasses, kosher wine bottles and members of the Sahler and Adelman families. In the bright light, I could see a couple talking quietly in a corner and Shainie Adelman and her new husband at the most prominent table in front of the room. Sam entered an open apartment near the back of the house where we spied a number of children playing. I could tell by the excited look on his face that this place was "where the action was". For my son, this translates to kids and toys, an immense number of both. I had a feeling I would be spending the majority of the evening right here.

Written by Ms. Shumans

APRIL IS THE SWEETEST MONTH

APRIL IS SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA MONTH

LISTEN TO WHAT CARMEN AGRA DEEDY HAS TO SAY!

(Don't forget it's ALSO NATIONAL POETRY MONTH)!

PLAINS AND WOODLANDS INDIANS

PLAINS http://inkido.indiana.edu/w310work/romac/plains.html

PLAINShttp: http//www.esd.k12.ca.us/Matsumoto/TM30/history/na/pl/pln.html

WOODLANDS http://www.ahsd25.k12.il.us/Curriculum%20Info/NativeAmericans/woodlandtribes.html

NATIVE PEOPLE http://www2.gfusd.k12.ca.us/bookmarks/native_americans.htm

http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/cultural/northamerica/iroquois.html

TIPS FOR SEARCHING

This time I used Google:

"Plains Indians" site:k12.ca.us

I used quotation marks to tell Google that I only wanted pages on the internet that showed those words together. Also, I told the search engine that I only wanted sites that were for K-12 schools (site:k12.ca.us).

Ms. Pfeifer
